Swim
Wet suits will be allowed according to USAT rules. That is, wetsuits are allowed up to and including 78 degrees F. Note the water temperature in Caz Lake has never exceeded 72F on race day, be confident your wetsuit will be legal. The entrance to the water is down a concrete boat ramp with a rocky lake bottom. The start will be in chest deep water. Please be aware there may be zebra mussels in the water.
During the swim, you will not be penalized for holding on to a safety boat as long as it’s not used to advance your position in the race.
Each race will start in four groups (wave start), with the faster swimmers seeded in the earlier waves (please be realistic in your seed time submitted with your race application, there is no wave switching race morning). Large tubular orange buoys will mark the corners of the swim course. Competitors must wear the swim cap that will be supplied at check-in.
Bike
Sprint Bike Course: Riders will exit the transition area on foot and mount their bike only AFTER crossing the mount/dismount line, then proceed up the main entrance to the park, and exit the park, turning LEFT. The first 1/2-mile is flat, followed by a RIGHT turn on Hoffman St. and up a challenging 1/4-mile climb to turn LEFT on Ridge Road. On Ridge Rd, you will face a gradual climb followed by rolling hills for 5 miles. A HOT LEFT TURN will then occur after a short but steep downhill grade, then flat to the halfway point. After turning left on East Lake Rd. the return will be rolling to flat road coming back to the transition area in the park to start the run.
THAT’S IT! 3 roads! From the park: left on E. Lake Rd., right on Hoffman Rd, left on Ridge Rd., left on E. Lake, right into the park.
Intermediate Bike Course: This course closely follows 2 loops of the Sprint course: From the park: left on E. Lake Rd., right on Hoffman Rd, left on Ridge Rd., left on E. Lake, left on Chard Rd. (instead of Hoffman), left on Ridge Rd., left on E. Lake, right into the park.
That’s 4 roads for the Intermediate, if you’re counting. Maps will be in transition race morning.
As a USAT sanctioned race we will enforce USAT rules on the course. Contestants must ride to the right of the road at all times. Not riding to the right wether blocking other riders or not is a penalty. No drafting will be allowed and violation is a penalty. (The drafting zone is a rectangular area 7 meters long and two meters wide surrounding each bicycle.) No passing on the right. Each contestant is responsible for repair/maintenance of his/her bike. No support vehicles are on the course.
For the rules, in summary, if you ride to the right hand third of your lane of travel, maintain a distance of 3 bike lengths behind the bike in front of you unless you are passing, complete your passes within 15 seconds of initiating the pass, and always pass on the left (without crossing the centerline) you’ll comply with 99% of the time. We also recommend you read the USAT rules & “The Most Commonly Violated Rules” summary (click for the links) prior to racing.
Helmets are required and must be worn on the head and chinstrap fastened before exiting the transition area. Chinstraps must be fastened at all times. Helmets must meet CPSC standards and have a CPSC sticker in it. (Note all helmets sold in the USA since 1999 are required to be CPSC approved. If your helmet is only Snell or ANSI approved it’s of an age where its likely past its effective useful life. CE only approved helmets do not meet CPSC requirements. A helmet or chinstrap violation is DQ (disqualification).
Although there will be volunteers and traffic control on the course, participants are responsible for their own safety at all times. Contestants must follow instructions of race officials and public authorities; and must obey all traffic laws. All participants must return their bicycles to an upright position in the designated transition area location before beginning the next segment of the event. There is no riding in the transition area, walk your bike in and out. When you remove your bike from the transition area after the race, be aware that other riders may be just finishing the bike segment. For security reasons, please personally remove your own bike from the transition area. It will be secure until noon.
Leaving T1 and returning to T2 will be on uphill & downhill sections respectively. Race officials will be posted at the Mount/Dismount Lines to ensure that the Mount/Dismount lines are observed. This is particularly on the downhill return section for spectator as well as rider safety. Penalties will be given to violators.

Aid stations will be setup along the run course, with water & Hammer Nutrition Products, at the first quarter mile, 1.5 & 2.5 mile mark (approx.). Runners will pass these stations twice for the Intermediate race so you’ll have 6 stations for the Int & 4 for the Sprint.
The run is flat for the first 1/2 mile then gradually climbs to the 2.5k 1/2 way Sprint U-turn cone. It then returns the same way, back into the park main entrance.
