Volunteer

The Cazenovia Triathlon has ample opportunity for volunteers to get involved in the action. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated and will receive a free volunteer tee shirt as a token of our appreciation.

Below are the volunteer positions available and the description of their corresponding duties. Check them out and fill out the form below to sign up in advance. The numbers before the position title indicate amount of volunteers out of the amount of positions available. If they are full, we will contact you to see what other position you would like. The form with your job preferences will be submitted to the Cazenovia Triathlon Volunteer Liaisons and they will confirm your position via phone or email, further confirmation may be viewed on the 2011 Volunteer Spreadsheet.

Race Day

Early Morning Organization

00/06 Volunteer Sign-in Table/Transition 6:00 am ’til 8:30 am These volunteers check in other volunteers, have volunteers sign waivers, provide email and phone numbers and issue volunteer T-shirts.  Remind volunteers of their assignments and any update news. Transition: At 8:30 or so “Sign-in”  volunteers will go to the transition area to about  12:00 PM.

00/04 Assistants to Volunteer Coordinator and Race Director 6:30 AM- 12:00 PM. These Volunteers are available to assist the VC or RD at any weak or trouble spots on the course or where other volunteers did not show.  Usually you will stay near the pavilion/transition area but we may need to sent you to a spot on the bike or run course.

00/10 Parking/Transition- 6:00 ’til 8:30 am. These volunteers with assist the police in traffic control and direct vehicles to the various parking venues.  Transition: At about 8:30 these volunteers will move to the transition area to about 12:00 PM.

00/08 Registration and Packet Pick up/ Transition- 6:00 ’til 8:30 am.  These volunteers check-in day-of-race participants and hand out registration packets to those preregistered.  Transition: At about 8:30 these volunteers will move to the transition area to about 12:00 PM.

00/12 Body Marking/Transition- 6:30-8:30 AM, verify race number and place on proper place on arm and leg.  Place age on calf.  Requires bending and those with back problems should avoid this task.  Transition: At about 8:30 these volunteers will move to the transition area to about 12:00 PM.

Swim, Bike, Run Activities

00/24 Transition 6:30 am ’til 12:00 pm. These volunteers check in competitors and keep non-participants out of the transition. They assist the competitors with their bike location and problems prior to the race. During the race you will assist by pointing the athletes to the correct exit depending on the bike or run.  You will assist with various problems.  You may be assigned to assist with the bike in/out location and the run in/out areas.  Since the park is small many volunteers are needed in these congested areas to keep cyclists and runners from getting in each others way and to keep spectators far enough back to give racers sufficient space.

00/06 Swim – on shore/Transition- 7:30 til 9:30 am. These volunteers check swimmers into the water and count those who exit. Be prepared to get wet up to your knees. Keep fans and supporters a safe clear distance from the course so the participants and organizers will have sufficient space to function.  My guard the chute from the water to the transition area so swimmers have an easy run the not dodge spectators crossing back and forth.   Transition: At about 9:30 these volunteers will move to the transition area to about 12:00 PM.

00/12 Swim – on water 7:00 ’til 10:00 am. Volunteers will be in kayaks or other water craft and keep swimmers on course and to lend assistance to those in trouble.

00/24 Bike course 8:00 ’til 11:00 pm. These volunteers check in at Chard Road near Ridge Rd and NOT at the waterfront.  You will sign the waiver, provide email and phone number and receive the Volunteer T-shirt.  The Bike course manager will assign you to a spot and provide instructions, equipment and signs that you will need. This task gives the volunteer the opportunity to sleep a little later :-) and still make a significant contribution to the Caz tri races. You may also go to the finish line at the end of your volunteer period. Most volunteers will be assigned to the various intersections to direct the cyclists in the proper directions so the do not take a wrong turn.  Others will be on the Hoffman hill climb early in the race and then move to another bike course location.

00/24 Run course 9:00 am ’til 12:30 pm. These volunteers get the opportunity to sleep a little later :-) and still make a significant contribution to the Cazenovia tri races. Volunteers will report to the Run aid station #1 on Emory Ave to sign the waiver, provide email and phone number and receive the Volunteer T-shirt.  You will then report to one on the run aid stations or be at the turn around locations.  There may be some need for traffic calming as vehicle traffic increases.  You will  assist in setting up the aid stations, mixing energy drinks, pouring liquids into cups and handing them to runners. Volunteers will assist in keeping the aid station clean and organized and help pack up as the runners thin out and the race ends.

Finish Line and Awards

00/08 Food 08:30 ’til 1:00 pm. These volunteers help setup and organize the food and refreshments for the participants. Assist in food preparation, getting ice, keeping drinks cold, food cutup and hand out to the athletes. Assist in packing up food when the race is over, clean up the trash during and after the event, help break down the tables and equipment and carry to the moving truck.

00/08 Finish line chute 8:30 ’til 12:30 pm. These volunteers check on the runners finishing and help determine int they need medical support, hand out finisher medals and water and direct them to the results posting or food tent.  May also flow to the award ceremony depending on need .

00/04 Awards 11:00 ’til 12:30 pm. These volunteers help organize prizes, help identify the proper athlete so they get the proper award.  Assist the Race Director as needed.

Disassemble, Clean up and Pack

00/12 Disassemble transition 12:30 ’til 2:00 pm. These volunteers will assist is take down of the pipe racks and fencing that supports the transition area. Help stack and load the pipes, fencing and supports. Clean up any trash and debris and return the area to pre-race clean condition.

00/12 Clean up 12:30 ’til 2:00 pm. These volunteers work the entire area from the swim, to the food area, the finish line and the transition area and helping to clean up , pack and load the truck.

00/10 Return Equipment to Storage area 2:00 pm ’til 4:00 pm. These volunteers make sure everything is loaded and then unload all the equipment into the Manlius storage shed so that it is neat and easily accessible.

Preceding race day

00/12 Packet stuffing 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm on the Wednesday, August 3 at Jamesville Beach just prior to our Club’s Wednesday night tri training series.

00/16 Transition set-up 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on the Saturday afternoon, August 13 prior the race day Sunday.  A picnic/BBQ is planned prior/during the set up process.

Anyone interested in volunteering please fill out the contact form or report to the registration table Sunday morning of the race. Volunteers are needed from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 pm, or any portion of time during the competition. Walk up volunteers are always welcome but advance volunteer registration makes planning & race day management much easier.
